Wings Shoot Down Walleye 5-4

David Gilbert scored twice but the Wings outlasted Toledo 5-4 in Kalamazoo Saturday night. Toledo has an overall record of 16-25-3-0 and is 7-14-3-0 on the road.


Toledo would strike first when David Gilbert scored a power play goal at 5:45 of the first for his 11th goal of the season. Kevin Lynch would not be denied as he scored his 7th goal of the season at 12:30 in the first period. Kalamazoo would get a goal from former Walleye defenseman Joe Sova at 15:36 to cut into Toledo's lead.


"We have kept the game so simple over the last few weeks," said Head Coach Nick Vitucci. "Unfortunatly we got away from some of that tonight and paid the price in that second period. I thought we battled hard but had some breaks go against us."


The Wings came out with two power play goals in the second period plus one at even strength to open up a 4-2 lead over the Walleye. Toledo would get another power goal as Max Shalunov fired in his 10th goal of the season at 15:52 of the second period.


With the Walleye trailing by one 4-3 going to the third period, The Wings would make it 5-3 when Brandon Martell wristed a shot past Coreau at 3:05. Toledo would cut into the lead when David Gilbert scored his second goal of the game at 11:10 of the third period. Gilbert thought he had his third goal of the game at 11:26 of the third period but it was waived off.


Walleye Notes:  Goaltender Jared Coreau made 35 saves on 40 shots in net for Toledo. Coreau has a record 1-7-3-0 on the season. Toledo is 3-4-0 vs. Kalamazoo this season. The loss snapped a season high three game road winning streak for the Walleye.
