The Bowling Green State University softball team lost a pair of games on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8) to begin their 2014 campaign. Playing in the CSU Dome Tournament at Krenzler Field, the Falcons (0-2) were swept in doubleheader action, losing by a score of 5-3 to host Cleveland State University, before falling to Robert Morris University 3-2 in a hard-fought extra innings game.
In game one, the Orange and Brown combined for six hits for three runs against the Vikings, as the Falcons went deep on three separate occasions throughout the game. Senior captain Erika Stratton (2-for-3) paced BGSU offensively, recording two of the Falcons' six hits, including her first home run of the season
The Falcons also received contribution at the plate from freshman Aspen Searle and Chelsea Raker. Playing in their first collegiate games, Searle and Raker hit back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for their first collegiate hits. Junior Jamie Kertes (0-1) started in the circle for the Falcons, allowing three earned runs and six hits in 5.1 innings of work.
"Our kids fought all game long and I was proud of the way we played," Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg said.
In game two, the Orange and Brown fell to the Colonials with an unfortunate call in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand Bowling Green their second loss of the season.
With runners in scoring position, the Colonials hit a fly ball that hit the top of the roof of the dome that covered Krenzler field. With the determination that the ball reached the outfield, the umpires ruled a single, allowing the winning run to cross home plate.
"It was a tough way to lose, but it was good to get back out on the field and play against some competition," Salsburg said. "Overall we had a solid day and we have something to build on."
Braiden Dillow started in the circle for the Falcons, not allowing a run in 4.2 innings of work. and allowed only three hits. The sophomore went toe-to-toe with Colonials' Badolato, as neither team could figure out the opponents' starter until the Orange and Brown scored first run in the top half of the fifth inning.
Deadlocked at 0-0, Schrock jumpstarted the fifth inning with a double to left field. Freshman Trista Mokienko then advanced Schrock to third base with a ground out to second base. Dillow then recorded her first RBI of the season with a grounder to first base to score Schrock from third base, handing BGSU a 1-0 lead.
After allowing a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning, the Falcons once again took the lead in the top half of the eighth inning. With two outs, Raker ripped a single to left field to allow Sami Parave from second base to score, handing the Orange and Brown a 2-1 lead.
"The kids played well and will come back stronger tomorrow in our final day playing at the CSU Dome Tournament," Salsburg said.
The Falcons finish up the Viking Indoor Tournament held at Krenzler Field with a two games on Sunday (Feb. 9). Bowling Green will take on Bucknell University at 9 a.m., and then finishing up against Canisius College at 1 p.m.
