Eastwood students to thank firefighters after bus garage fire

Posted: Updated:

Pemberville, OH - We have a follow-up to a story out of Wood County.

It has been more than two weeks since a massive fire destroyed the Eastwood Schools bus garage and administrative building.

13abc's Christine Long reports from Pemberville on how the district is moving forward and thanking firefighters.

Scorched trucks, burned filing cabinets, and charred, twisted siding are surrounded by fencing.

What sparked the fire that caused this destruction remains a mystery at Eastwood Schools.

"Everybody can speculate, but unfortunately we'll probably just never know," says Brent Welker, Superintendent of Eastwood Schools.

The superintendent's staff has been working out of a massive disaster relief trailer since the fire.  It's a command center on campus from the insurance company which is still calculating the damage estimate.

The fire on Saturday, January 25th destroyed the district's bus garage and administrative building.  It did not destroy any buses or spread to the schools.

"We're functioning in the buildings," says Welker. "All of our WiFi is back up and running. For the students, there probably isn't really a whole lot different."

Administrative employees were able to save some computer drives, but are busy recreating lost files.

District leaders are still trying to figure out if they're going to rebuild here.  The other option, if a levy passes in November to build a new K-through-5 school, is to tack administrative offices onto there.

In the meantime, for space, the Superintendent, Treasurer, and Board staff will next week move into an old school building about seven miles away on Dowling Road which has been empty for five years.

Next Friday, February 21st, Eastwood students and faculty have a special plan to thank the firefighters from Troy Township, Pemberville-Freedom, and the other area township departments which helped put out the blaze.  During halftime of the home basketball game they plan to honor the hardworking men and women who saved the rest of campus.

"We were concerned that we would lose the wrestling building, too, but firefighters did a great job limiting the loss to the one building," says Welker.
