Vacant Bettsville home bursts into flames

Posted: Updated:

Some say they thought it was a blast in a nearby quarry.

Turns out, it was an explosion inside of a house.

It happened in the village of Bettsville at the corner of Union and Monroe.

Around 8:15 a.m. Thursday, neighbors said an explosion shattered the windows and cracked the walls of a home as it burst into flames.

Nearly one hour before that, some neighbors say they thought they had smelled natural gas.

"At five till seven this morning, I went out to start my wife's car for work and I smelled natural gas, really strong," explained Bettsville City Councilmember Stan Poe.

"Looked out the front window, and I could see then all the windows were blown out of the front of the house," described neighbor Don Rouser, "and seemed like in about 15 minutes the whole house was engulfed in flames."

The Bettsville Fire Chief says he had just dropped off his kids at school when he saw the flames himself and called for backup.

Volunteers from several departments spent the morning hours hosing down the brick structure.

They set up temporary pools because the fire hydrants froze up, prolonging the effort to smother the fire completely.

No one was home at the time of the fire, so no one was hurt.

In fact, since the owner died, neighbors say no one had lived in the home for a few years.

Firefighters called in the State Fire Marshal's Office to investigate.
