Fire departments practice ice rescue

Posted: Updated:

Six area fire departments practiced how to save someone from icy water on Saturday.

First responders spent the morning learning techniques in the classroom, then put on their wetsuits and put their knowledge to the test in the afternoon.

Experts remind people to take responsibility for their own safety when they're out on the ice.

Lt. Spencer Morris of the Middleton Township Fire Department said, "The biggest thing that a lot of people don't realize is that it can take less than two minutes for someone to get hypothermia. So that's a big thing to keep in mind, too. Dress for the occasion and always remember to check ice conditions."

It's also important to let someone know when you're headed out onto the ice and when you expect to be back.
