The Bulldogs traveled to Lake Forest to take on the Foresters Saturday night in a battle for second place in the NCHA standings. The teams split a weekend series back on November 1-2 with the Bulldogs getting the better of Lake Forest in the first meeting, 4-2. Saturday was the final regular season matchup between the teams with the winner controlling its destiny to a second-place regular season finish in the NCHA and a first-round bye in the conference tournament.
The first period saw the Bulldogs take an early 1-0 lead as Michelle Jones scored her seventh of the season just 2:13 into the game from Hannah McGowan and Alix Vallee. Lake Forest battled to even the score at the 8:00 mark on an even strength goal from Michelle Greenaway. The Bulldogs continued their tough play as they once again took the lead as Kelsey Kusch scored her 19th of the season on a power play opportunity from Jones and Lexie Tzafaroglou with 6:15 remaining in the period. The Foresters once again managed to even the score before the first period horn as Emily Wybo scored on a power play opportunity with 4:12 remaining. Adrian could not escape the first 20 minutes before Lake Forest scored one more time with 2:08 remaining as Greenaway notched her second of the game on a power play chance to leave the Bulldogs looking up at a 3-2 deficit.
The second period saw the Foresters advance their lead to 4-2 as the Bulldogs could not manage to find the back of the net. Lake Forest scored its second power play goal of the game as Marissa Weber scored just 5:05 into the period. The Bulldogs fought off the rest of the Lake Forest attacks, but did not manage to cut their lead before the end of the period as they headed into the final 20 minutes down by two.
The third period saw Lake Forest advance their lead to 6-2 as Wybo scored her second of the game on a power play and Holly Lesperance scored into an empty net on a short-handed opportunity. The Bulldogs continued to battle as they fought back to score at the 17:35 mark as McGowan scored unassisted for her 12th goal of the season.
Jade Walsh made the start in the net for the Bulldogs and played the first 20 minutes as she made 15 saves. Brooke Gibson finished the remaining two periods for Adrian as she stopped 18 shots.
This loss drops Adrian to 17-6 on the season and 10-6 in the NCHA. The Bulldogs will see action again February 21 when they travel to Marian (Wis.) at 8 p.m. and February 22 when they travel to Concordia (Wis.) at 3 p.m. for their final regular season matchups of 2013-14.
