Lourdes took 24th-ranked Cornerstone to the wire on Saturday afternoon at Mol Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich., but two free throws by the Golden Eagles with 13 seconds left proved to be the difference as the hosts defeated the Gray Wolves 61-60.
The Gray Wolves took the lead 60-59 with 40 seconds to play on a basket by Emily Orsini (Akron, Ohio/Archbiship Hoban H.S.), and forced a three-point miss by Cornerstone with 15 seconds to play. However, Shelby Peterson got the offensive rebound and was fouled, and made two free throws with 13 seconds left for the final margin.
Lourdes jumped out to an 18-7 lead nine minutes into the contest and still led by 10 with 7:40 left in the first half. Cornerstone went on a 16-5 run over the next six minutes to take the lead before Tiffany Scott (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Sylvania Southview H.S.) made two free throws in the final seconds to give the Gray Wolves a 29-28 advantage at the break.
The Golden Eagles built a seven-point lead, 49-42, with nine minutes left in the game before the Gray Wolves slowly clawed back. A Scott basket at the 4:40 mark tied the game at 53 and Tiffani Blackman (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) made two free throws on the subsequent possession to put Lourdes back on top. The lead then went back and forth down the stretch until Cornerstone's final free throws.
Tarynn Hampton (Saint Louis, Mo./Alton H.S.) led four Gray Wolves in double figures, scoring 16 points. Scott added 12 while Orsini and Blackman each chipped in 11 more for Lourdes. The visitors shot 35.9% from the floor for the afternoon but made 19-of-23 (82.6%) free throws to keep the game close.
Tanner Hochstetler led Cornerstone (19-8, 14-6 WHAC) with 14 points while Emma Lockhart added 13 points for the Golden Eagles. The hosts shot 38.8% from the floor and committed 18 turnovers.
Lourdes (6-21, 4-16) will return home on Wednesday evening to begin the final week of the season. The Gray Wolves will host Siena Heights at Tam-o-Shanter with tip-off slated for 6 p.m.
