Work continues at Wood County train derailment

Posted: Updated:

Clean up continues tonight after a train jumped the tracks in Wood County. A CSX spokeswoman says they hope to have train and vehicle traffic moving through the area by late tonight or early Wednesday morning. According to CSX, 19 cars on the northbound train derailed about 9:30 Monday night. The train was headed into the Toledo area from Indiana.

According to CSX all of the cars that derailed with the exception of one were empty. The other car was carrying scrap metal. There were no hazardous materials involved. Two buildings sustained minor damage. The Washington Township Maintenance Department and the Washington Township Fire Department. A closet, a shed and a bathroom were damaged. No one in the train or on the ground was hurt.

Crews from both CSX and a derailment specialty company have been working around the clock to get the damaged tracks replaced. Nathan Kiefer is with the Washington Township Fire Department,"The clean up crews were here by midnight and started cleaning up right away. I went home at 3am and came back at 6:30 and they already had some cars moved out. They move quick and they work hard. We are very happy with the improvements they've made already.

There is no word on a cause at this point and the CSX spokeswoman says the investigation could take weeks.
