Water main break closes part of Broadway St.

Posted: Updated:

There are new developments after a water main break shut down a Toledo street and left homeowners without water service. The line on Broadway Street broke Tuesday night near South Hawley. Now the city says the entire road needs to be replaced.

The water on Broadway has receded, but a heavily damaged road is left behind.

The water department is still on the scene after noticing a huge spike in water output Tuesday night. The main, which typically puts out 80 million gallons of water a day, jumped to 122 million gallons a day.

It turns out a 30-inch main broke. It happens to be the oldest in the city, dating back to 1873.

At least one nearby business had some water damage and a few cars were underwater as a result of the break.

Now that the valve is turned off, crews have to get to work fixing the larger problem, and that includes making sure the road is safe to drive on.

The road is set to be closed at least through the end of the day. We're told it could take several days before the issue is resolved.
