Road reflector heavily damages SUV on Airport Highway

Posted: Updated:

It wasn't a pothole but a reflector that did serious damage to a car. The reflector and the bracket that holds it in place came smashing into the windshield of a local couple as they were driving along Airport Highway near Holland Sylvania Tuesday night. Luckily the windshield is the only thing that was hurt.

Dustin Davis and Jessie Thatcher say it took awhile to figure out just what hit them, "It happened so quickly there was no time to react. There was just enough time to scream and have glass go everywhere." This is what's left of the windshield on Davis' SUV after the road reflector came crashing into it, "It broke a four inch hole all the way through. There was glass all over me and I had to pick it off her face."

Davis and his girlfriend Jessie Thatcher were on their way to sign the lease on a new home when it happened, "I thought it was a taillight. I was terrified and I screamed. I had glass in my mouth and I was covered from head to toe in powder. There was glass all the way in the backseat, that's how hard it hit."Davis says they were surprised by just how heavy the reflector is, "It was the reflector and the entire bracket which is solid steel. I would guess it weighs about 10 pounds."

Thatcher is about 8 months pregnant, so they had extra concerns,"You look at the damage, you look at the windshield and you look at the hole and the little piece next to the hole. If that second piece came through I could have been hit in the chest or stomach. I am so very thankful, so very thankful."

Jessie and Dustin filed a police report and they have a theory about what might have happened, "It was probably a plow that went over and loosened the reflector and then someone hit it just right and kicked it into our windshield. It was a one in a million shot and we were that one in a million."Dustin has been in contact with his insurance company and they may try to get reimbursed by the Ohio Department of Transportation. 13abc reached out to an ODOT spokeswoman and she tells us any claims have to be filed through the State Court of Claims.

Jessie and Dustin obviously were not able to sign the lease on their new house Tuesday night but they got it done this afternoon.
