Pemberville prepares for possible flooding

Posted: Updated:

Temperatures are rising and for the first time in a long time, you can see the waters of the Portage river in Pemberville.

It's a sign of spring, but it can also mean flooding.

"The biggest worry is the rain that's coming Thursday," Pemberville Mayor Gordon Bowman said.

The National Weather Service reports the Portage will rise to a minor flood stage.

Still, Mayor Bowman has been meeting with a number of different agencies making sure they're all prepared.

"Because of the snow pile we're trying to take some extra measures to make sure our citizens are alerted to the potential and to be ready to assist them if they need it," Bowman said.

Like gathering volunteers who can help at a moments notice.

The village is also providing sand and bags for residents free of charge to help protect homes and businesses prone to flooding.

"I don't think it's going to be as bad as we've had it before," Pemberville resident Sarah Knott told 13abc.

She's one of the lucky ones.  Her home isn't usually bothered by flood waters.

But she know exactly what it's like when the Portage spills over its banks.

"It was absolutely covered in water, over the bridge and down the street," Knott remembered.  "We would put up barricades behind the bank and just keep the water from going any further to the businesses."

Regardless of the concerns, many remain optimistic that Mother Nature will be kind.
