Heavy rain floods city streets

The brief warm up we experienced melted the snow and caused some streets and businesses to flood.

Residents say they expected a little flooding, but not like this. The head of the sewer department told me his crews started two days ago clearing snow from the storm drains, but it appears it didn't help      

The heavy rain caused roads to flood and problems for drivers. Streets in residential neighborhoods were under water.  

"It got pretty deep in the intersection there for a minute. This is the first time it's flooded this year. We have problems but not normally this bad," said Toledoan Austin Erel.  
 
Austin Erel was trying to clear away the snow and ice in front of his home.

"Most of the water gets stuck out into the middle of the street. I'm trying to get it to move along help it out at least," said Erel.
          
City leaders say the sewer department started clearing snow from the storm drains two days ago. Today's rain caused the slush from the streets to plug some of the drains again. That caused some streets to flood.
 
"I think the problem might be that there's too much water with all the snow around and all the excess water so i'm trying to keep it out of my basement," said Erel.
     
The sloppy sleet and rain caused a headache for some business owners in Sylvania Township. The owner of Stitch had to close after her business flooded.

"It started yesterday coming further and she said in about 15 minutes it flooded the whole front of the store. We figured we should close and get everything important up off the floor and now we are just going to clean," said the owner of Stitch Allison Fox.

The problem: "The snow is all lining the back end of the building so we are digging that out," said Fox.

City leaders want you to call City Hall if you see a street that's flooded, or an overflowing ditch or if you water in your basement. That number is 419-936-2020
