Expansion planned at Westgate VIllage Shopping Center

Posted: Updated:

Plans are already drawn up for an expansion at Westgate.

Those plans call for three new buildings north of Central, near Secor, where Arnie's and El Nuevo Vallarta now stand.

A Spokesperson for Westgate Village Shopping Center estimates the expansion will cost $5M-$7M.

Developers have designated one building as a retail and restaurant strip, similar to the one with the Starbucks and Chipotle across the street.

Another will house medical offices, possibly for physical therapy or dialysis.

And a third will be a stand-alone restaurant.

Right now, two restaurants stand on the property - Arnie's and El Nuevo Vallarta.

The owner of the Mexican restaurant estimates rent in the new building would top ten thousand dollars a month, and says it would not make business sense to stay.

"The people who own the properties are from Chicago and they're just used to a different type of economy in Chicago, maybe," says Jose Meda of El Neuvo Vallarta.

The property owner of Westgate says the company negotiated with the restaurants, but the parties were not able to reach an agreement.

So, instead of staying put or closing down, the owner of El Nuevo Vallarta decided to move.

He bought the former Bikini Bar and Grille on Douglas and says he should be open there within a few months."

As for the new developments at Westgate, we will get our first look at the designs Monday, when they're turned in to the Toledo-Lucas County Plan Commission.
