One month until Health Care deadline

Posted: Updated:
Toledo, OH -

The clock is ticking.  If you don't have health insurance you have just about a month to get it and it sounds like some people have still not gotten the message.

The deadline is March 31st, that's the day you need to have health insurance.  If you don't have it on April 1st, you could be facing a fine.  But there is still time to avoid the fine.

Even the President himself admitted the rollout of healthcare.gov was bad, but people using the site now say it's much improved.

"Most of the hiccups I have seen are ironed out.  The ability to go in and create an account and move all the way through is much easier," said Julie Grasson with Carenet.

Through February 1st about 60,000 Ohioans have selected a plan through the healthcare exchange.  Grasson says there's worry not everyone is getting the word.

"We are still seeing a lot of people that don't know it's the law.  That it is required of them to have health insurance," said Grasson.

Experts say a few things are slowing the signup process; people not brining all their information, like other insurance plans for their kids.  Another issue is people sorting through all the plans, especially if they already have a doctor they prefer.

"Some docs may be covered under one set and not necessarily al of their medications are covered under that same plan," said Grasson.

One other issue for people getting insurance for the first time is learning the terminology.

"Monthly premiums, your copays your coinsurance a lot of people, those are terms that are not familiar to a lot of people who've never had insurance," said Grasson.

As for the fine, it's one percent of your income or $95 per person, whichever is higher.  It will increase yearly.

Another common issue, signing up online can get you connected to Medicaid for people with lower incomes, but not Medicare for older people.
