A look back at how we hit the snow record

Posted: Updated:
Toledo, OH -

The late fall season started without an El Nino or La Nina weather pattern which normally steers warmer weather into the Great Lakes. At the same time the arctic air and snow pack built up rapidly in Canada during November which was the first warning sign a harsh winter was in the works.

The first snowfall of the year occurred on November 11th. While snowfall was below average for November, the pattern turned around a few weeks later. The fourth biggest storm of the year hit on December 14th with 7.4" of snow in Toledo. A rare winter thaw moved in a week later melting all of the snow and causing flooding, but the pattern flipped back to cold and snow a week later.

The flakes were flying to start off the new year with a 48 hour long storm. The light snow added up to 10.2". Three days later a near blizzard hit with 13" of snow with wind gusts reaching 46 mph. The temperature added insult to injury reaching a low of 15 below and the wind chill hit 45 below zero. "Clipper" was the word for late January. It snowed for 13 consecutive days adding another 15.5 inches to the seasonal total. 8.4" fell during the early morning hours on February 5th which was the 3rd biggest storm of the year.

One of the heaviest bursts of snow hit nearly two weeks later. Thundersnow with snow rates over 2"/hour arrived during the evening on February 17th. After all of the powerful storms this winter season, light snow put us over the snow record Tuesday night when a total of 0.8" reached the ground.
