Big check from Washington helps Bittersweet Farms

Posted: Updated:

It was certainly another cold day here in Northwest Ohio but that didn't stop a harvest of fresh produce from being served up at Bittersweet Farms. Bittersweet is a world renowned program that serves both children and adults with autism. The program received a more than $100,000 grant from the Department of Agriculture that will help expand the community supported agriculture or CSA program.

A luncheon on Wednesday featured a number of the vegetables grown at Bittersweet's greenhouses and hoop houses. In addition to horticulture they also have culinary, creative arts, wood shop and grounds keeping programs. About one in every 88 children is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. More than 80 people with autism either live at the farm or take part in day programs.

The United States Department of Agriculture awarded Bittersweet a $116,000 grant for its Community Supported Agriculture program. Elliot West who heads up the horticulture program says the money will be used to expand the product line and help more people with autism get involved with the horticulture program, "The CSA is like a vegetable co-op, so anyone can buy a membership in the beginning of the year and they get a share of the harvest every week."

You have a chance to sample some of the produce grown at Bittersweet. They sell various products at both Churchill's Markets and The Baker's Kitchen and as West said, if you're part of the CSA you can take home boxes of vegetables every week during harvest.
