Elmwood students accused of lying about dying teacher

Posted: Updated:

Those at Elmwood Local Schools want to clear their name.

District leaders say they had no part in an apparent scam involving a few students.

Police in Findlay say students dressed in Elmwood athletic clothing were going door to door, asking for money.

The money, the students claimed, was for a dying teacher at the school.

Findlay police posted on Facebook, "After some checking it was found that there is no such teacher at the school.  We believe that there may be numerous victims in and around NW Ohio."

Those at Elmwood say they're not sure whether the students asked for money anywhere else.

Administrators have notified the school resource officer and turned the investigation over to the Wood County Sheriff's Office.

The lieutenant there could not yet comment on the open case.

Bottom line, Elmwood's superintendent says, if someone claiming to be from Elmwood asks for money for a cancer patient, don't give it to that person, and if you already have, call police.
