Calamity days add up in Michigan

Posted: Updated:

There is no doubt this winter has caused some major headaches for everyone.

Record breaking snow and cold have resulted in hazardous driving conditions, non-stop shoveling, and snow days.

In Northwest Ohio at least 9 school districts have used 10 or more.  Some are as high as 15.

Michigan schools are no different.

In fact, Bedford schools have announced plans to keep kids in class until June 17th to make it up.

"I think it's a little long," Greg Race, a Bedford Parent said.

Michigan lawmakers are trying to modify the rules but legislation has stalled.

By law, the district now has to make up the days at the end of the year.

But some parents think there are better options.

"I think the teachers and everyone should agree to eliminate a week for spring break," Amy Nagley, a local parent, said.

"I think it should have been added to the school day, an hour or so, and then let them out early," Race said.

All of this could change if the state House and Senate come to an agreement.

But for parents, there area still a lot of unanswered questions.

"We're not even to March yet, so how many more days are going to rack up?  How many are going to be forgiven?" Nagely said.

For now, there are no answers.

Right now, districts in Ohio and Michigan are basically in a holding pattern, waiting to find out what's next.

The Riverdale School teacher caught on camera being physical with a student has resigned. Superintendent Eric Hoffman tells 13abc he received Barb Williams’ resignation letter Friday. Hoffman will not release the letter at this time. He tells 13abc he will give the letter to the school board Monday at its meeting where the board is expected to formally act on the resignation. Hoffman would only say the letter says she will resign immediately.
