Winter reaches 5th coldest on record

Posted: Updated:
Toledo, OH -
You wouldn't know it by looking outside, but Saturday is the first day of Meteorological spring. The first official day of spring is just 19 days away now. Meteorological winter starts December 1st and runs through February 28th (or 29th on a leap year). This makes it easier to calculate uniform statistics on each season since the first day of the new season varies each year. So that means we now know how this winter stacks up in the records in terms of cold. Surprise, surprise the last time we had a winter this cold was in 1977-78. The average temperature was 20.5° which was 7.4° below normal. That is the 5th coldest winter in the 142 winter seasons on record which is very rare. If you are surprised we only rank #5 on the list, keep in mind December was relatively normal overall. Temperatures were only a couple degrees below average. So in other words if this pattern would have started a couple weeks earlier in December we probably would have given 1977-78 another run for its record.

A temporary fence is now in place around a private pond in Perrysburg. That's after an elderly man somehow fell into the water and died. It happened last week, at the senior living center "Saint Clare Commons."Rescue crews recovered the body of John Voland, along with a motorized wheelchair. Voland, who was 94, lived at the facility. The director tells 13abc the temporary fence will stay up until the completion of the internal investigation and the one by police.

Inside of the Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion, it can get hot. After all, the hands-on section is called the "Hot Shop."The rest of the museum has to stay cool, to keep the completed pieces from melting or weeping.
