The Bowling Green State University men's golf team escaped the snowy weather hitting Northwest Ohio and headed south to take part in the 2014 Samford Intercollegiate hosted by Samford University in Hoover, Ala. on March 3-4.
The 2014 Samford Intercollegiate will be held at the par 72, 7,001-yards Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala. on Monday and Tuesday, March 3-4. The tournament will start with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start on Monday morning with the second round of play immediately following on Monday afternoon. The final round of play will begin at 9 a.m. CT on Tuesday morning.
The 2014 tournament field is comprised up of 16 teams in Samford, Austin Peay, Campbell, Belmont, Bowling Green, Eastern Kentucky, Francis Marion, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville State, Miles College, Montevallo, South Alabama, Southern Illinois, UAB, Western Carolina and Western Kentucky.
Last season at the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate Tournament, the Falcons finished 16th out of 18 teams with a 54-hole combined team score of 926 (308-306-312). Returning to the event this season for the Falcons are juniors Ryan Triller, who shot a 231 (81-76-74), and Joe Cooper, who carded a 239 (86-76-77). Also returning is Holden Pahr who posted a 242 (78-78-86) in last year's event.
Coach Kevin Farrell's lineup for this year's Samford Intercollegiate includes freshmen Jose Narro and Brett Rinker, as well as senior Chris Melvin, who will join both Cooper and Triller as the five Falcon team participants. Both Joshua Bialecki and Pahr will compete as individuals at the two-day event in Alabama.
Narro, who missed the Falcons' first spring event due to an illness, will tee-off his first spring season at BGSU this week at the Samford Intercollegiate. Narro posted two top-10 finishes during the 2013 fall season and carded three sub-par rounds of golf, including a low round 68 at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational.
Rinker, who also had two top-10 finishes over the 2013 fall slate, went 1-2-0 at the Mid-American Match Play event back on Feb. 10-11. The freshman posted a first round 2 up win over McCormick Clouser before falling in his next two head-to-head bouts.
Cooper finished the Mid-American Match Play event on a high note, as the junior defeated Brad Burgess of Ohio 5 up over his last 18 holes of golf to finish the three round event at 1-1-1, while Triller, who went 0-3-0 overall, improved each and every round of play at the match play event and will to continue his improvement this week.
Like Triller, Melvin struggled with consistency in his first spring event three weeks ago, however, the senior battled back to push his opponent in the final round of match play to a 1 up contest over all 18 holes of play.
Playing as individuals, both Bialecki and Pahr will each be playing in their second straight event in the 2014 spring season having both competed at the Mid-American Match Play event back in February.
The tournament will tee-off at 8:30 a.m. CT on Monday morning, March 3, with a shotgun start.
