2 separate school bus crashes Monday morning

Posted: Updated:

Two separate bus crashes in two separate districts sent half a dozen people to the hospital Monday morning, causing some scary moments for students and parents.

More than 20 kids were on a Swanton school bus when it was involved in an accident on Airport and South Main. The fire chief says some of the kids had cuts and bruises, but all are going to be okay.

We're told both of the drivers involved were taken to Saint Luke's hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Ohio Highway Patrol says the school bus had been traveling northbound on Main, when a pick-up truck traveling eastbound failed to yield, hitting the bus.

The Swanton fire chief says, when he arrived on scene, he learned his own two children were also on the bus.

"My parenting kicked in, and my job, parenting more than job at the time, and I checked on all the kids I knew," says Chief Chad Smith. "I saw a couple with cuts and scrapes and we triaged those and got them taken care of."

One parent was furious, claiming Swanton schools dropped the ball by not alerting parents fast enough.

"My wife got one phone call with no voice mail. She works nights. She was sleeping and didn't answer the phone," he says. "I received no phone call. I'm second on the list. My mom received no phone call. She's third on the list."

Other parents thought the situation was handled well. "They had to go seat by seat and get phone numbers and verify that everyone was called, and that's why it took so long," another parent said. "That made sense, but I was still a little shaken."

Not too long before the Swanton bus crash, another crash happened involving a school bus. This one happened around 7 a.m. on Douglas near Grantwood in Toledo.

The accident sent a teen to the hospital. Police say 17-year-old Leann Ketchum ran into the back of a TPS bus that was stopped to let students on board.

"There are two students that board at this location. The first one got on the bus, and that's when the car hit the bus," says TPS Director of Transportation Brad Aemisegger.

The teenager's car slid underneath the bus, trapping her inside. There was only one student on board the bus at the time of the crash.

The student, bus driver and aide were all taken to the hospital for observation, but none of them were injured.

As for the driver of the car, at last check she was in serious condition.

Police are still investigating why she failed to stop.
