Cold spreads 100s of miles, 60" down

Posted: Updated:

Even after the snow comes to an end, we continue to pay the toll from the cold.  With several inches of snow on the ground, northwest Ohio can see its temperature plummet an extra 5-10 degrees on clear nights.  Needless to say, that makes a daytime rebound much tougher.

Toledo has roughly seven inches of snowfall on the ground at the moment.  While that's plenty, it's only a fraction for our neighbors to the northwest are dealing with.  Missoula, Bismarck and the Twin Cities each have a foot of snow.  Anytime a system comes up from the south or west, counterclockwise winds pull that icy air over the Canadian snow pack and into our neighborhood.

The cold doesn't just extend across north.  Brutal frost depth has wreaked havoc on public utilities.  It's also held off new early spring construction, with more than three inches of water to melt off.

In northern Michigan, the soil temperature four inches down was about ten degrees this morning.  Back in our area, it's a touch warmer at about 20-21 degrees.  The freeze goes 60 inches down along Glendale.  That's five feet.  The Water Department has thawed more than 300 fire hydrants because of that.
