The Defiance men's lacrosse team came up with a trio of goals in the second half, but the high-powered attack of the Bethany Bison was too much to overcome as the Yellow Jackets fell 20-3 on Saturday, March 8.
In the first two periods of action, the home squad controlled the ball on offense. Bethany racked up 35 shots to DC's 11 and led the game 14-0 going into the intermission.
Even with an aggressive Bison attack, the Purple and Gold's freshman goalkeeper Ricky Potts (Irmo, S.C. / Irmo) was a bright spot in the second period as he notched 10 saves.
After coming out of the break, Defiance came together and played much better in the second half.
Just over five minutes into the third quarter, Yellow Jackets freshman Matthew McGervey (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton-La Salle Catholic) beat the Bison's goalie for DC's first score of the day. It was his second goal of the season.
Another bright spot on the afternoon was the return of junior Dylan Textor (Howell, Mich. / Howell) who had missed DC's first two contests with an injury. The midfielder came through with a score later on in the third period for his first of the year and then added a second goal with under a minute left in regulation.
Overall, Bethany posted 50 shots to the Purple and Gold's 27. Defiance however did top the Bison in saves (18-12) and posted a solid 31-for-40 mark in clear attempts.
The DC men's lacrosse returns to the field Wednesday, March 12 when it takes on the Capital Crusaders in Bexley, Ohio. Action is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
