Lourdes University's softball team opened its 2014 season on Sunday afternoon, earning a win and a loss at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla. The Gray Wolves began the campaign with a 14-2 victory over Ave Maria before falling 7-5 to Stevenson in eight innings.
In the opener the Gray Wolves capitalized on four errors and seven walks by the Gyrenes to score 11 unearned runs in a game that ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Freshman Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) put Lourdes on top in the top of the second inning with a two-run double to right-center. Ave Maria tied the game in the bottom of the inning with three singles that produced a pair of runs.
Lourdes batted around in both the fourth and fifth innings, sending 11 batters to the plate in the fourth while breaking the game open. Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) singled with the bases loaded to put the Gray Wolves on top and Encalado followed with a sacrifice fly that plated two runs following a Gyrene throwing error. After Lourdes scored two more runs on an error, Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse,Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) hit a two-run home run to left, capping a seven run frame.
In the fifth, Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) and Megyesi both drew bases loaded walks to increase the lead to 11-2 and Roberts cleared the bases one batter later with her second double of the game.
Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) allowed just one hit after the second inning to earn the win (1-0) in the circle. She finished the day giving up six hits in the five innings of work, striking out two while not walking anyone. Beth Vaccareeza suffered the loss (0-1) for Ave Maria (8-14), allowing nine runs, only three of which were earned, four hits, and four walks, in 3.2 innings of work.
Lourdes jumped on top in the bottom of the first of game two. Roberts delivered her third double of the game to score Megyesi, who had walked with two outs. Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) followed with a two-run home run to straightaway center, making it 3-0 Gray Wolves.
Stevenson plated two in the top of the fourth inning, but Lourdes immediately answered in the bottom half of the frame with two of its own. Mosiniak led off with another round-tripper, this time to leftfield, while Encalado added a RBI infield single.
The Mustangs tied the game in the fifth, scoring on a RBI double and a two-run home run. The game stayed tied into extra innings when Stevenson plated a pair of unearned runs in the eighth to earn the victory.
Hanna Allison (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1) in relief, giving up two unearned runs in three innings of work. Briana Pichalski picked up the win (1-1) in relief for Stevenson (2-2), yielding just one hit in four scoreless innings.
Lourdes (1-1) will return to action on Monday afternoon with two more games in Clermont. The Gray Wolves will face Saint Xavier at 3 p.m. before taking on Spring Arbor in a 5 p.m. contest.
