Perrysburg uses more salt than expected in snowstorm

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday. Perrysburg was near 50-degrees.  Wednesday, it got nearly 7 inches of snow and the roads were covered.

Rick Toepfer is the Deputy Director of Public Service in Perrysburg.  He knew this storm would be trouble, telling 13 abc's Bill Hormann, "We figured we'd have a hard time keeping up with it."

Toepfer was out with crews, Wednesday morning.  The day before, he hoped crews would only need to spread aout 80 tons of salt during the storm.

It may end up being more than that.

Toepfer said, "We didn't use a lot this morning, just enough to break the ice up a little bit.  It may get up to 100 tons but no where near what we would normally use in a storm like this."

Ice, overnight, forced crews to spread salt on neighborhood streets but when that ice turned to snow, eight salt trucks hit the streets-- two more than the city wanted to use.

Businesses tried to weather this storm but with the town skimping on road salt in neighborhoods, some shops didn't do very well, today.

Dave Sperling manages a restaurant in downtown Perrysburg.  He sees the dilemma the city faces, saying, "Obviously they got to do what they got to do.  Obviously that's going to make a different situation for us if people can't get out of their driveways.

And a slow day led some business owners to wonder why Perrysburg didn't just spend to buy more salt.

Dion Wilson manages a kitchen and bath store.  He says, "The more we sell the more taxes we're going to make and today.  They're not going to get much from us."

Toepfer insists, this is "not a matter of cost; there's just no more available.  We far exceeded anyting we ever thought we'd use this year."

So Perrysburg used more trucks and more salt than it wanted today.

But the Ohio Department of Transportation today emailed Perrysburg saying it will begin the bidding process for next winter's salt supply.

Perrysburg will try to buy 5,000 and hopes not to use it all.
