ODOT on 12 hour shifts after Wednesday storm

Posted: Updated:

Starting Wednesday, the Ohio Department of Transportation has plow drivers working 12 hour shifts, clearing the highways and interstates of heavy, wet snow.

"We have over 100 trucks out right now, and that's going to continue probably through the overnight as will have blowing and drifting," explained Theresa Pollick, a spokesperson for ODOT district 2.

Her area covers Williams, Fulton, Henry, Lucas, Wood, Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca Counties.

Right now those counties are covered in snow.

"Seeing as what we've seen this winter, nothing is out of the question," Pollick said, "and generally we do prepare for the worst."

Part of that preparing is making sure the district has enough salt to get through the rest of the season.

Right now, Pollick estimates District 2 has enough salt to get through 2 or 3 more storms, with another delivery expected Friday.

"There's no quit with ODOT," she said. "We just have to make sure we do our best to keep the roads open, and that's what was done all winter long including with this snowstorm."

Pollick says ODOT directors will take another look at the annual budget once we're out of the snow season.

They will then have to evaluate whether they need to cut back in other areas to make up for the money spent on salt and overtime.
