Sunshine means inside work for ODOT crews

Posted: Updated:

Today's sunshine helped clear a lot of the remaining snow and ice off the roads. This is the last weekend in winter according to the calendar but there is a chance of more winter weather in our forecast. So Ohio Department of Transportation crews are regrouping for another potential round of snow. Both the equipment and the crews haven't had much of a break this year. A lot of the crews are in the shop today getting the trucks and plows ready to go back out on snow patrol and money spent on equipment early in the season is paying off.

Plows, pavement and the people who take care of them have taken a beating this winter. District 2 Deputy Director Todd Audet says this year has been brutal," We come out of one event and there's not a lot of time to get ready for the next event and while we're getting ready for the next event, we've got pavement falling apart."

While the march sunshine on Friday helped clear the roads, work is underway inside the ODOT garages, "We are bringing the equipment inside and washing it, inspecting it for safety and replacing broken parts. We're also trying to rest our crews."

The crews and the trucks have been working overtime all winter. In spite of the overtime more than 90% of the ODOT trucks in Northwest Ohio have stayed on the road. Audet says that's due in part to some early season purchases, "We spent a lot of money on equipment and spare parts but it was a great investment to re-capitalize before winter."

There were some crews on pothole repair work today and while a lot of focus has been on salt and plowing costs, pot hole work has been expensive too, "When we had our last warm up two weeks ago we used all of our pothole patching material . We used 500 tons of hot mix which we have never done this time of year before." But this may be the best way to look at it, "We'll get through it. Spring is right around the corner and we have never lost this war. We always fight the battles and eventually summer comes!"

You can learn more about the cost of doing battle with old man winter from Audet as well as details about some multi-million dollar ODOT summertime construction projects on Conklin and Company this Sunday at 11am.
