Ohio Senators agree: No troops in Ukraine

Posted: Updated:
Toledo, OH -

With harsh sanctions potentially coming to Russia, 13abc talked with both of Ohio's senators about how the United States should proceed in this escalating situation.

Despite being on different sides of the political aisle, both senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman shared some very similar views.  When it comes to any sort of military action, they're both on the same page.

"We're not going to send ground troops to Ukraine, that's just not a question," said Brown.

"I don't think we should put boots on the ground, but I do think we should stand up for the Ukrainian people," said Portman.  Senators Portman and Brown, neither in favor of a military invasion.  But they think our greater weapon is sanctions.

There have to be some consequences for invading a sovereign country which is what President Putin and the Russians have done," said Portman.

"It's important that we stand strong here, but we're not going to war," said Brown.

Both believe those economic sanctions would need to be backed and supported by not only the US but by other countries throughout the world.  Each Ohio senator saying a group effort will send a more clear message to President Putin.

"The United States can't do this alone anymore.  We need to make sure we have other countries with us and we isolate Russia," said Brown.

"We don't want to be the world's police officer.  We don't want to be the one to go in every time and not have other support," said Portman.

The worry now is that if the Crimea region is under siege now, what's next?  So the idea is to send a strong message now, so that this behavior does not spread throughout the region.
