Elmore says goodbye to murdered police officer

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds mourned a promising life cut short on Saturday.

Elmore Police Officer Jose "Andy" Chavez was gunned down last weekend while celebrating his birthday with relatives at a the Last Call Bar in Fremont.

Chavez left behind a wife and two young children. His funeral service was held inside Woodmore High School and then the young officer was laid to rest with full police honors.

Elmore Police Chief George Hayes says Chavez spent two years with the department and quickly became an important part of the tight-knit family of officers. "It is a very difficult time we are a small agency. Andy is like a family member as opposed to being an employee."

As the funeral procession made its way through Downtown Elmore towards Westwood Cemetery, police departments from across the area showed their support for the EPD.

The show of support mean a lot to Chavez's friends and family. Family friend Victoria Everett said. "It's very difficult. You hear this and you're like, that is such a senseless crime." She says the outpouring from fellow officers helps ease the pain.

The community is also planning on helping in other ways. Amber Ruemmelle is organizing a fundraiser to raise money to help the grieving families. "We don't know the families and most of the community don't know the families personally, but everybody is willing to jump in."

Also killed in  shooting were bartender Ramiro Sanchez and Daniel Ramirez.

Igmidio Mista was arrested and charged with murder in the shootings.

Donations for the Chavez family are being accepted at  Fremont Federal Credit Union or Huntington Bank.
