Lourdes Baseball Concludes Series at Davenport

Posted: Updated:

Lourdes wrapped up a four-game Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-6 and 1-0 in doubleheader action at the Farmers Insurance Complex in Davenport, Mich.

Lourdes fell behind early in the opener, giving up two runs in both the second and third innings.  The Gray Wolves cracked the scoreboard in the fourth as John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.) walked and moved to third on a failed pickoff.  He scored on a sacrifice fly by Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.).

Davenport added two more in the bottom of the fourth and another in the sixth to build a 7-1 lead before Lourdes began to come back.  Garrett Jex (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green H.S.) had a RBI groundout and Jake Conklin (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) had a run-scoring single as part of a three-run seventh.

The Panthers added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth which Lourdes answered in the ninth, but the comeback fell short.  Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) and Kefalos had the final two RBI with singles in the inning.

Jex was the only Gray Wolf with two hits in the contest and Lourdes defense hampered the pitching staff, committing six errors.  Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Oho/Start H.S.) suffered the loss, allowing six runs but only two of which were earned, and four hits.

Jordan Anderson earned the win for Davenport, striking out 10 and allowing just one unearned run in six innings of work.

Game two was tight throughout, as Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) limited the Panthers to just one run and five hits over five innings of work.  Unfortunately for him, Lourdes bats were silent as the Gray Wolves managed just two hits, one by Cole Fitzgerald (Rome, N.Y/Centerville [Ohio] H.S.) and another by Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) against Anthony Alarcon.  Alarcon went the distance striking out eight and walking just one in the shutout victory.

A two-out single by Jordan Zylstra in the bottom of the second produced the lone run of the game for Davenport (12-7, 4-0 WHAC).

Lourdes (0-8, 0-4) is scheduled to open the home slate on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Taylor.  First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Mercy Field.
