The ACHA Gold Division III hockey team earned the 2014 National Championship for the third season in a row on Saturday at the Florida Panthers IceDen with a 1-0 victory over Hope College. The Bulldogs (21-10) did not have as good of a regular season as the past two seasons, but turned it up come postseason time.
Adrian earned a berth into the championship game after a 6-1 win on Friday against Robert Morris (Ill.) White. Scott Schueneman scored a pair of goals in the semifinals with a short-handed goal in the second period and the team's final goal in the third. Mitch Kahl also scored a goal in the first period unassisted and Anthony Rossi also scored in the first to give AC a 3-0 lead.
Edward Schaeffer scored in the second period with Adrian's fifth goal. Fred Krause assisted on the final two goals of the game for Adrian. Mitch Laflamme made 19 saves in the game for the Bulldogs.
Kahl was Johnny-on-the-spot in Saturday's final as he scored the only goal of the game at 4:44 of the third period. Adrian's defense was stout throughout limiting the Flying Dutchmen to only a few good scoring chances.
"I'm so proud of this group of players because this season was not easy," said head coach Trevor Markovich. "We hit some bumps in the road, but focused when the time was right. Coming into nationals, we were playing better than ever this season. Our experience really showed over the last few days. We even dropped a game in pool play, but that did not stop us from winning the whole thing for the third straight time."
