Southview Senior Heads to Harvard

Posted: Updated:

Malcolm Johnson is a scholastic superstar. He's been gifted with record breaking speed.

He holds the State title in the 60 meter and this weekend he placed 4th in the nation. He says running hasn't always been a breeze.

He tells 13 ABC, "I really thought I was super fast, but I had a reality check at my first junior Olympic meet. I realized there were other kids in this country that are super super fast so from that point on I realized I had to continue to work as hard as I can to stay at the top of my game. "

Malcolm isn't content with just being fast on his feet. His eyes stay on the prize in the classroom as well. This Sylvania Southview Senior has a 4.3 GPA and credits his parents for instilling the importance of education. He tells 13 ABC

"Ever since I was little they were hard on me...you better get good grades or else...so I didn't want to know what else...I just always tried to do my best in the classroom and on the field. " That focus has paid off. Malcolm has been accepted to Harvard, one of the most prestigious Universities in the world. He tells 13 ABC, "I really liked the Boston area and I talked with my track coach and I fell in love with the area."

These accomplishments don't surprise his speed coach dorian hooker at Pro Day. He explains why Malcolm is able to set records on the track...and in the classroom. He tells 13 ABC, "He puts a lot of time and energy in being productive be it educationally and athletics."

Malcolm has some advice for young people. He tells 13 ABC,

"just focus on what is necessary and what is important in life and work really hard."
