Suspect in firefighter deaths makes 2 court appearances

Posted: Updated:

The man accused of setting a fire that killed two Toledo firefighters was back in court Thursday morning. Ray Abou-Arab faced two judges on two separate charges.

Abou-Arab is facing aggravated arson and murder charges for the January apartment fire on Magnolia Street that killed Privates James Dickman and Stephen Machcinski. He's also facing drug trafficking charges.

In the murder trial, the judge ordered the state to turn over its evidence to the defense and told both parties not to tamper with anything at the site of the fire.

Abou-Arab has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he could face the death penalty. His pretrial was set for Thursday, May 1.

Moments later, he made another court appearance in an unrelated case. Abou-Arab and his son, Omar, are accused of selling synthetic marijuana called XLR11.

A Lucas County prosecutor says the trafficking may have taken place on two occasions. The arraignment Thursday was continued to April 7.

Meanwhile, the community continues to show support for the Toledo Fire Department. Next Wednesday, "Feed Our Toledo Firefighters" will have its second commemorative dinner, sending a meal to every fire station in Toledo.
