TPD expanding SkyCop program

Posted: Updated:

The Toledo Police Department is expanding their SkyCop camera system, adding 30 new cameras in different areas. Don't be surprised if you find a SkyCop camera overlooking your neighborhood.

One sits right across the street from Meyers Auto Wash on Heatherdowns. "I think it will help to keep things a little safer. I hate to think that somebody might do something in the area, but if they do," says business owner Nikkie Meyers.

Some of the new cameras are in business areas "where people doing a lot of shopping, where are people cars getting broken in," says Toledo police Sgt. Joe Heffernan.

There's a camera at the corner of Dorr and Westwood near UT. There's a camera on Upton near the Upton Bar & Grill, where police say the neighborhood has had numerous problems. Sgt. Joe Heffernan says the cameras have helped to reduce crime and solve cases.

"All that being said we have caught crimes on these cameras too and it hs helped us solve some serious incidents like some bank robberies and things like that," says Heffernan.

Eyes are also watching the corner of Hill and Wenz. Some homeowners and Toledo business owners don't mind the new safety features.

"I couldn't figure out the exact perimeter of the area it's going to cover, but in any case we've had customers come in and ask about it, and I think it gives everybody a little sense of comfort to know that it's there, and I want our families to feel like when they come through and get their car washed they can be comfortable," says Meyers.

TPD has also partnered up with private organizations, whose surveillance video is streamed into the police department.
