Confusion over status of MI same-sex unions after ruling

Posted: Updated:

Same sex marriages are on hold in Michigan after a Federal Appeals Court issued a temporary stay on gay marriages late Saturday afternoon

Several hundred couples tied the knot on Saturday before that ruling came down and now the legal status of those unions is in doubt.

Dozens of couples were lined up at the Washtenaw County Courthouse to apply for licenses and dozens of them exchanged vows on the spot in front of their families and friends. Washtenaw County was one of four Michigan Counties that were issuing marriage licenses to couples on Saturday.

Couples like Erin Trame and Carrie Turner who said they had been waiting 21 years.

A federal judge ruled Friday that Michigan's same sex marriage ban wan unconstitutional. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette filed an emergency to request for a stay.

One woman said she dropped everything to make her wedding happen. "It's not every young woman's dream to rush to the courthouse on a Saturday morning and have a 4-hour window to get married, so we're obviously glad we got to do it. "

Just after four on Saturday afternoon, the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals suspended same sex marriages until Wednesday.

There are conflicting legal opinions on whether the marriages that took place before that ruling are valid.  Right now, many couples may find themselves in legal limbo.
