Lourdes Baseball Sweeps Concordia for Season’s First Victories

Posted: Updated:

Back-to-back bases loaded walks with one out in the bottom of the ninth of game one lifted Lourdes to a 5-4 victory over Concordia (Mich.) on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field, giving the Gray Wolves their first win of the 2014 season.  Lourdes followed the win up with another triumph, taking advantage of a six-run fifth inning to post an 8-3 win over the Cardinals in the nightcap.

Concordia jumped on top in the opener with three unearned runs on just one hit in the second inning.  The Gray Wolves found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run of its own as Victor Diaz (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf H.S.) scored on a two-out throwing error.  Josh Redies (Saline, Mich./Saline H.S.) pulled Lourdes to within on, 3-2, with a RBI single in the fifth that plated John Crooks (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills H.S.).

The Cardinals loaded the bases in the sixth with no one out before Lourdes starter Drew Lepiarz (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) was lifted for Brandon Holt (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna H.S.).  Holt allowed just one run to score, and then was nearly perfect over the next three innings, keeping Concordia off of the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Lourdes rallied with three runs in the ninth for the win.  Cody Berg (Garrettsburg, Ohio/James A. Garfield H.S.) and Nick Toth (Medina, Ohio/Hudson H.S.) led off with back-to-back singles and a Crooks hit loaded the bases with no one out.  Andy Kefalos (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) made it a 4-3 game with a RBI groundout as all three runners moved up 90 feet.  After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Tyler Trame (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic H.S.) drew a pinch-hit walk to tie the game.  Redies then worked a free pass for the game winning run.

Holt earned the victory (1-1), allowing just one hit while striking out four in four innings of relief.  Mike Melcher suffered the loss (2-1) in relief for the Cardinals.  Toth had a three-hit effort while Redies was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

Concordia took the lead first again in game two with single runs in the second and fourth innings.  Lourdes answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth as Trame walked with the bases loaded to force home Kefalos.  The Cardinals retook the two-run lead the next half inning with a one-out double.

The Gray Wolves responded with six runs in the bottom of the fifth, sending 10 batters to the plate.  Kefalos had a RBI single and Marty Ramirez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) added game-tying double to right.  Ryan Kovar (Cleveland, Ohio/Benedictine H.S.) put Lourdes on top with a two-run pinch-hit double before a Trame ground out plated the fifth run of the inning.  Redies then scored on a fielding error with two outs to increase the lead to 7-3.

A Kefalos sacrifice fly in the sixth added the final insurance run and capped a 2-for-3 game for him while providing his second RBI of the night.

Frank Shaffer (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg H.S.) earned the win (1-1), working five innings allowing three runs, only two of which were earned, on five hits.  Tyler Steele suffered the loss, giving up all eight runs, six of which were earned.
