State University gymnast Lauren Feely
was named the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, the league
announced following the conclusion of the MAC Championship Saturday.
Feely, who also earned second team All-MAC honors, made an immediate impact on the Falcons' lineup during her initial collegiate season. She is one of the team's most consistent vaulters, scoring a team season-best 9.900 on the apparatus. Six other times she recorded a score of at least 9.800 on the vault this year. Feely also spent considerable time competing in the all-around, posting a personal-best 38.975 at the Chicago Style Meet.
"Lauren is a hard-working athlete who uses feedback from the coaching staff to her advantage," Head Coach Kerrie Turner said. "She is always ready to upgrade her routines and to take extra time to fix little details, while being continually mindful of her competitions. She was committed to the intent of our program from day one and it has shown in her ability to contribute. Beyond that, she is a great teammate and student. I expect Lauren will continue to grow and excel as her career continues at BGSU."
At the MAC Championships, Feely competed in three rotations, opening the day for the Falcons on floor exercise with a 9.725. She followed that with a 9.775 on vault and a 9.625 on the uneven bars. She is the second Falcon in three years to earn the MAC Freshman of the Year award and the fourth BGSU gymnast in program history to earn the honor, joining Jamilah Ali in 2012, Marny Oestreng in 1999 and Heather Ferguson in 1995.
