Costco is a go in Perrysburg

Posted: Updated:

The road to Costco has been bumpy at times.

But Tuesday, Perrysburg City Council voted 4 to 2, approving a special use permit to get the project rolling.

"There were some good points made on both sides of this," Mayor Michael Olmstead said. "There is no exact but, I think, overall the right decision was made."

The corner of Eckle Junction and SR 25 will soon be home to the area's second Costco location.

The company wants to build a 150,000 square - foot store and a gas station.

But there are some concerns.  Two members of council voted no.

They say traffic concerns and other logistical questions have not officially been ironed out.

"Those restrictions were things Costco agreed to do and would confirm those things got done and satisfy some of the specific concerns of residents," councilman, Thomas Mackin said.

Mackin says he believes the company will make good on its promises, but feels having those specifications built into the ordinance would show the citizens their voices were heard.

Mayor Olmstead says many of those issues will be resolved.

In fact, engineering firms have already created intersection designs to help with congestion.

"Will there be more traffic? Yes," the mayor said.  "That comes with growth but it will be managed and the intersection will ultimately be a better one than it is now."

The next step comes Thursday, when Costco will present the final site plan to the planning commission.
