A chance to get your hands on a museum exhibit

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of works from a world famous contemporary artist are now on display at the Toledo Museum of Art.  There's a bit of a twist to this exhibition, you have a chance to be part of it.

Varujan Boghosian has a unique way of creating his masterpieces. He travels to antique stores and junk shops to find the pieces he uses in his artwork and part of his studio made the trip to Toledo. His work is on the walls of many major museums but his name may not be one you know. Amy Gilman is the Curator of Contemporary Art,"Varujan Boghosian is not a household name. A lot of people here are discovering his work through this exhibition."

About two dozen of his collages and sculptures are part of this special exhibition. He uses things like children's toys, old doors and sheet music to create his pieces, "He takes things and puts them together in ways you would not imagine based on their original intention. He has two studios full of full of things he's collected over the years. He finds them and keeps them until he decides the right place for them and they make their way into his compositions over time."

The exhibit is about more than the artwork Boghosian has created. You have a chance to make your own masterpiece with various items from his personal collection. It was Boghosian's idea to bring his studio to life at the museum and the studio experience seems to be giving people an extra appreciation for his work, "They'll come into the exhibition here in the Wolfe gallery to see the show, then they will go into the studio space to create their own piece. They'll come back to the exhibition with a new set of eyes."

The unique studio gallery gives children and adults a chance to create art that doesn't involve cell phones or computers, "This exhibition and display of studio space means you get to engage with the real thing in a way we don't have people do much more in the world we live in."

The exhibition of Boghosian's work is here until May 25th. The studio gallery with the hands on artwork closes on April 13th in order to make way for another exhibit. Both the exhibition and the studio gallery are free.
