Authorities: Home explosion injures 6 in Detroit

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - Authorities say a suspected natural gas explosion has leveled a home on Detroit's east side, injuring six people including two young children.

The explosion and fire were reported about 8 p.m. Thursday.

Detroit Police Capt. Mark Bliss tells the Detroit Free Press that two of the injured were in critical condition and the other four were in serious condition but expected to recover.

Detroit Arson Chief Charles Simms says the children had burns to their faces. Simms says investigators are working to determine the cause of the explosion. He says utility workers indicated that the home had electricity service but not gas service.

DTE Energy spokeswoman Erica Donerson tells The Detroit News that the utility had shut off gas service to the home on Feb. 18 at the customer's request.
