Toledo City Council passes budget

Posted: Updated:

After pushing back the vote last week, Toledo City Council members have passed the city's budget.

The mayor presented some new numbers to council, council withdrew a few spending ideas, and the budget was passed after an hour of debate.

Last week, the issue was over $418,000. Council wanted to spend it, but the administration wanted to use it to pay for an increase in rent at One Government Center.

On Monday, council agreed to put that money in a fund which will pay the rent for the next six months.

Two councilmembers who wanted to spend surplus money decided to withdraw their plan and look for the money somewhere else.

The budget ended up being balanced only because of a transfer of $14 million from the capital improvement fund, a move the mayor blames on the governor in Columbus.

"If we have the same revenue stream that we predictably had before the Kasich administration, we wouldn't be having the debates we had today," Mayor Collins says.

Toledo is getting $16 million less from the state.
