Vendors express interest in the Erie Street Market

Posted: Updated:

The Erie Street Market has been quiet in recent years, but there is something in the works that, could, bring it back to life.

"There's a number of parties that are interested in it," Toledo Development Director, Matt Sapara said.

Sapara says Promedica's move to downtown has boosted interest in the warehouse.

He says there are 6 to 7 vendors considering the space.

"What we want to do is focus on the residential development downtown and the need for downtown development," Sapara told 13abc.  "There are a lot of individuals that have moved into this city that need basic services."

Specifics about which businesses could move in aren't available, just yet, but the hope is to turn it into a shopping center.

At the top of most wish lists, is some place to buy groceries.

"We have a lot of housing down here, so a little expansion on that and things that people can us, like a grocery store and more things like that," Alex Suffron, who lives in Toledo, said.

"I think any development downtown, particularly in the Warehouse District, is good news," Jim Mettler, owner of Ye Olde Cock n Bull, said.

He says expansion means business, not just for him, but all of the area restaurants, bars and shops.

"I think development of that size, regardless of what they put in, draws people from outside the downtown area into the downtown area," he said.  "It's good for all of us."

The city could either sell or lease the property, but nothing is official.

City leaders hope to move discussions to the next level soon, and have a signed deal this summer.
