MONROE, Mich. (AP) - A Monroe food pantry this month celebrates a milestone serving its 500,000th meal.

The Monroe News reports that the God Works! Family Soup Kitchen has fed homeless and other people in need since October 2005. A ceremony will be held April 16 at St. Joseph Catholic Church to mark the occasion.

Program director Jeff Weaver said he never expected the program to take off like it did. Other churches were serving meals at the time but the need grew as the economy worsened.

The nonprofit organization now oversees 13 free weekly meals for low-income families in the Monroe County area.
