Senior Mike Ross posted a score of 36 on the first nine holes and wrapped up the afternoon with a 39 on the back nine to post a round of 75 (+3) on day one of the Rose-Hulman Invitational. Defiance currently rests in 6th at 326 strokes.
Ross (Bryan, Ohio / Bryan) sits in a tie for second with three other competitors and remains only one stroke behind leader Sanders Park, after his opening round of 75. It was Ross's third best 18-hole score of the year.
Zach Weber (Ottoville, Ohio) and Jack Tinsley (Kettering, Ohio / Eaton) then finished second and third for the Yellow Jackets, respectively. Weber notched a round of 82 (+10) for the day, which was his second best during the 2013-14 campaign. Tinsley wrapped up his afternoon one stroke behind Weber with a score of 83 (+11).
Scoring fourth for the Purple and Gold was Rick Girona (McClure, Ohio / Ostego), as the junior came through with an 86 (+14). The final DC golfer to score was Derek Lucas (Eaton, Ohio / Eaton), who came in with an 18-hole score of 95 (+23).
Defiance did have two other golfers compete on the afternoon but did not score for the team. Junior Ryan Edelbrock (Delphos, Ohio / Delphos St. Johns) finished the invite with an 89 (+17) and then senior Josh DeGroff (Stryker, Ohio / Stryker) wrapped up the day with a score of 97 (+25).
Hanover ended day one of the competition on top with a team score of 307. Wabash is close behind in second at 311 strokes and then Thomas More and Rose-Hulman are in a tie for third at 314.
