Start High School performs a "Toledo Surprise"

Posted: Updated:

For the first time in four years, a musical is headed to Start High School.

One of the songs may have you wondering: Did they change the words?

Turns out, they did not. The song was made for Toledo.

"Toledo Surprise" is the actual name of a show-stopping number in the musical "The Drowsy Chaperone."

For the first time in four years, students at Start are putting on a musical.

"It's really nice, considering we haven't done one in four years," says Sophomore Justin Doughty.

"I love Broadway and I love the shows," adds Senior Taylor Johnson. "I'm always used to, like, the Sweeney Todds and Phantom of the Operas and stuff like that. This is something different. It actually correlates to our town."

The show is a send-up of old school gangsters.

Having it performed by a group from high school gives it yet another twist.

"I think they are having the time of their lives and they are realizing how much work goes into it, and at the same time, how much commitment," says drama teacher Nancy Ludden.

The big surprise here might just be the musical itself, which is a rare endeavor for Start High School.

You can see the students perform "The Drowsy Chaperone" today at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are available at the door.

They're $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors.

The Start High School auditorium is located inside the West Toledo YMCA on Tremainsville Road.

Too much of the toxic algae triggered the "do not drink" order at the start of the August. The Maumee River is one of the lake's greatest water sheds, running more than 130 miles from Indiana through Ohio to the lake. Changes to it could make all the difference. One local university is at the forefront of tracking what's going into the river.
