Summer Outlook

Posted: Updated:
Toledo, OH -

Overall, temperatures are expected to stay cooler than normal across the Great Lakes region. The "heat dome" is expected across Texas with another region of hotter than normal weather in the Pacific Northwest. While the Southwest should be much hotter and drier than normal in June and early July, an active monsoon season may keep the rest of the summer cooler and wetter than normal. The area of above average rainfall showed up in the long range projections from the Rocky Mountains to the upper plains and Midwest.

We are still struggling to break out of the cold winter pattern. That will continue to have a lingering impact on our weather along with the cold water temperatures in the Great Lakes. An El Nino is also developing and will start having an impact on the weather pattern late summer into the fall and winter. The strength and type of El Nino that develops is still up for debate.

<May>
Temperatures in May are expected to be near normal to slightly cooler than normal with drier than normal weather.

<June>
June may bring the most interesting weather of the summer. The heat is expected to build in quick across the southern 2/3rds of the country with the northern 1/3 staying cooler than normal. As a result our severe weather risk will be higher and above average rainfall is expected. Temperatures are expected to be around average.

<July>
July will likely be cooler and drier than normal along with the entire Midwest and Great Lakes.

<August>
The weather pattern should moderate some late summer. Temperatures and rainfall are expected to be near normal to slightly below.

If you compare the upcoming summer to last year, temperatures will likely be very close to one another, but this year probably won't be as wet as last summer.
