As water recede, fish bite

Posted: Updated:

Floodwater from the Maumee continues to cloud all of western Lake Erie.  It's not the prettiest sight, but for some, the murky water means new business.

"When you get a push of warm water, and the water temperature of the river has been rising the past couple days, that big push of water out to the bay, that's where most of the fish are staged, out in the bay, that signals for them to make their run," Gary Lowry said.

Gary Lowry owns the bustling Maumee Tackle shop.  He expects fishing to improve as the river recedes.  Another rise is likely later this week but not to major levels.  The Ohio River Forecast Center estimates that the entire basin would need three inches or more of rain to get Waterville up to the major stage.  That's only happened five times.

The river gauge just across the Maumee River from Waterville.  And while the Maumee certainly looks impressive right now, the crest actually came early Saturday afternoon.  It could come right back up with rain in the forecast.  But the historical crest more than a century ago was more than ten feet above where the river is now."

Spring's hectic weather isn't ideal for everything but it certainly helps out with fishing.

"When the barometer drops, the fish start feeding," Lowry said.  "When a storm is coming, usually the fishing is better.  It does slow things down, because the simple reason is they're not quite as accessible."
