Allergy season busy, but weeks delayed

Posted: Updated:

It's pollen season, or at least that's what the calendar and spring sunshine would make you think.  Doctor Jeff Ford of Toledo hospital says May is peak time for seasonal allergies but there's also a late-summer bump.

"You know, it runs in families," Dr. Ford said.  "And people with allergies tend to be the same people with asthma and exema, just a kind of vigilant immune response in general."

Because of our delayed snow melt this year, there's still plenty of standing water around our area.  But also because of that delayed end to winter, pollens are not nearly as bad as they normally are at this time of year.  Some of the worst culprits, though, are trees.  If you believe the normal statistics down to our south, we expect about a six-fold increase by the end of next week.

"Sometimes your body detects these pollens and other proteins from plants or has foreign and it has an immune reaction like it would to a virus or bacteria," Dr. Ford said.  "Kinda causes the nose to run, it kinda causes you to produce more mucus to expel those foreign bodies.  And some people have a kind of more exaggerated response than others."

Tree and mold allergens are rated low in Dayton and Cincinnati.  In Sylvania, tree pollen is high this week.  Grass and weed pollens are delayed several weeks.  Weather plays more of an indirect role on health year-round.

"It's really not the cold, though, that causes that illness.  It's just being inside more around other people.  You know, I've told my mother-in-law that and I still can't convince her," Dr. Ford said.

Yesterday's rain will briefly tamp down tree pollens.  But the long-term standing water could lend itself to extra mold and mildew in the undergrowth.
