STRIVE 5K walk and run

Posted: Updated:

Toledo's strive program will hold it's first annual 5k walk and run in memory  of domestic violence victim Jordan Jones Harris.  The STRIVE program helps youth and adults get their diplomas.

They will walk, run and have fun in honor of Jordan Jones Harris. She was a student in the STRIVE program. STRIVE stands for success through review incentive vision and effort.
It's designed to help students pass the Ohio graduation test. Jordan joined the program after she didn't finish high school.

"She was actually able to catch up on a lot of the old material just through all the review because that's what strive is about. It's about a lot of review just reinforcement so that they and practicing so they actually are prepared for the test," said STRIVE teacher Tamara Smith.

Jordan never received her diploma. Police say she was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend.
Marquise Walker is accused of the crime. Like many students Jordan came to the program to work toward a higher education. Tamara Smith is a teacher with STRIVE. She's helping students make the grade.

"I actually just ran into a student that pulled me over and said I know you. I said how do you know me? You helped me pass my test five years ago and it changed her life. it was at that moment when you know this is why I do what I do. that's why we do it to see these kids lives change. now they have that piece of paper that says now move forward with your life," said Smith.

She hopes you'll lace up your sneakers and register for strives 5k walk and run. All proceeds will go to support the summer tutoring program. Toledo police officer Flow Wormely says many students are having trouble passing the O-G-T's.

"So this is of course another opportunity to give them a chance in the summer time to take care of their business," said the founder of the STRIVE program Officer Flo Wormely.

And a chance for you to help support local students. The walk will be held May 17 at Ottawa Park.  Find out more on Facebook.

"We need the support of our community because we are keeping these kids off the street. We are trying to get them diplomas so they can do something productive with their lives. so we don't hear them out doing things  they shouldn't be doing they are now focused and they have a purpose," said Smith.
