Business is good for local home construction firms

Posted: Updated:

The long winter was obviously hard on most of us. One of the many things the cold and snow made it tough to do is dig holes for new homes. However with the improving weather, crews are able to get back outside and many local home construction companies are seeing a boost in sales. Saba Custom Homes has sold about a dozen new construction homes in a matter of weeks. In fact, the company has seen double digit increase in business the last few years.

The Brookhaven subdivision in Perrysburg Township is just about finished. Aaron Sloan is a partner with Saba Custom Homes, "We began construction in Brookhaven when the economic downturn was starting and we are starting to dig the last hole in here now. We have 180 homes in this development, so it was wildly successful even during the economic slow down."

This is just one of the developments Saba is working on, "We've sold 10-12 homes in just the last two weeks. It's been phenomenal." The company has been in business for thirty years focusing on homes ranging from the high 200's to lower $300's, "In the last four years we've seen sales increases of 20-25% a year. We built about 60 homes last year and this year we hope to build about 75. The weather has slowed us down a bit because we weren't able to get holes in the ground, so we may fall a little short of that."

Sloan says local builders in all price ranges have been seeing an increase in business, "I think as long as the interest rates stay decent and there are no major hiccups in the economy I would think the numbers will continue to slowly improve. Although I don't think we'll be back where we were 6-7 years ago anytime soon." He adds an improving market for existing home sales also helps the new construction market, "Not only are people more comfortable with the economy, they're also more comfortable with the prices they can get for the houses they are in."

Saba crews are now getting ready to build in the Hawthorne subdivision which is also in Perrysburg Township. Crews are now working on the infrastructure in the development and the first houses will start going up in the next month or so. Right now a lot of the new construction business is in the Perrysburg area as well as Sylvania and Monclova Township.
